Wine Tasting in Ragusa: Visit to the Valle dell’Acate Company

This wine tasting tour will take you to the discovery of the winery  “Valle dell’Acate”, which is located near the town of Acate, in a strip of Sicily South Eastern characterized by a historical and cultural heritage well known in the world.

The winery was founded in the late nineteenth century by the Iacono family and, since then, the vocation for the field of wine production has been passed down over time, along with the will to improve and raise awareness of the production internationally. Today, Valle dell’Acate is conducted by the last generation of the Iacono family  togheter with the Ferreri family. It is one of the most important companies in the field of wine production of south eastern Sicily.

The property covers 100 hectares and much of it, since 2001, has been replanted with local and international vines. Here are produced a number of wines of undisputed value: the famous Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG (designation of origin and guaranteed), DOC (controlled designation of origin)  Frappato, Insolia, Zagra and Bidis, the IGT (geographical ascription)  il Moro, Rusciano and Tane, obtained from the selection of the best grapes in the most important harvests.

The visit consists of a path between the company’s own vineyards and continues with one of the modern cellar of barrels and casks, where mature and get older the wines of Valle dell’Acate. It will be also possible to visit the old “millstone”, which  today is a  wine museum. The winery has a striking stone structure, characterized by large openings that were used to bring in the “tracks” of the millstone the freshly picked grapes. In this place you will relive the old rural world and bucolic atmosphere where time seems to stand still.  Then, we arrive in the ancient cellar, defined as “A cathedral of wine”, where there will be a tasting.

The tasting includes: 3 glasses of wine matched to Ragusano DOP cheese, olives, “Ciappe” (dried tomatoes) and homemade bread.

You will savor excellent wines which evoke the scents of Sicily, know their mode of production and the history of this company.
